5 Myths About South Africa You Need to Stop Believing

South Africa.

A land of contrasts, wild nature, warm people, and deep history. But also a country surrounded by many misconceptions. Let’s take a look at the five most common myths that it's time to set straight.

1.      „South Africa is a dangerous country, better not to visit at all.

Yes, there are areas in South Africa that are not safe – just like in most countries around the world. But tourists are guided by professional guides away from risky areas. National parks, wine regions, and smaller towns are safe as long as you follow basic rules. You always know where you're going, with whom, and why. And I believe you can manage it on your own as well. In Prague, you wouldn't walk into alleys that aren’t welcoming, or that you know are not advisable to visit. Just think of Prague – the main train station.

2.      „It's always hot in Africa.

South Africa has four seasons, and for example, Cape Town has a climate similar to the Mediterranean. In winter (June–August), you might encounter rainy weather. When a cold front comes through, it can be quite noticeable. When you head out, especially during the winter season, which is ideal for hunting, expect chilly mornings and warm days. Africa is definitely not just about heat.

3.      „Animals roam freely everywhere.

No, lions won’t run up to greet you at the airport when you arrive. Animals live in national parks and private reserves, where they are well cared for and where you can observe them safely. Outside these areas, animals don’t roam freely. And if an animal happens to get out and causes an accident, do you know who pays for it? Not the insurance company, but the owner of the animal.

4.      „All people live in poverty.

South Africa is a land of contrasts. Yes, there are informal settlements, but there are also areas full of luxury, modern homes, galleries, and top-notch restaurants. It’s a modern country with a strong economy and entrepreneurial people. As for food, it’s of high quality. Many medicines can be purchased directly in stores, and there are pharmacies that double as medical centers, where a doctor is present. If something bothers you, instead of seeing a general practitioner, you can visit a pharmacy where the doctor will advise you. When it comes to many things, like fashion or certain regulations... they are about six months ahead of us.

  1. „Africa is all the same.

South Africa is just one of 54 African countries – and each has its own culture, history, and nature. South Africa offers mountains, deserts, savannas, beaches, vineyards, cities, and traditional villages. One trip is not enough.

In conclusion?

South Africa is a country that will captivate you and leave you with a desire to keep coming back.
